The chapel was start building in the 1650s and was completed in 1665. It is often said that the chapels were built by Gävle Fishermen, but that's not entirely true. Barsta chapel was built mainly of farmers in nearby villages, with some reluctant support of coastal fishermen.
The chapel has beautiful paintings. There is paintings in the ceiling by Roland Johansson Öberg born in Sörbyn at the northern Ulvön. They were painted in 1699.
Each season there is a number of baptisms and weddings in the chapel as well as a worship ceremony which replaces Nordingrå church morning service.
Every spring they will together clean the chapel up. The families in Barsta take turns weekly to ensure that there are fresh flowers on the sanctuary.
